Devotional

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. Galatians 5:22-23 CSB

Today’s verses are ones that should be memorized and put into practice daily. A couple of quick observations. First of all, notice it’s the word “fruit” and not “fruits.” These nine qualities are not a list of things that you can pick and choose from when it comes to which ones you would like to express. It’s a singular list with nine expressions of God’s Holy Spirit at work in your life. Secondly, this list is all about your maturity. You can do a self-examination on your maturity level by determining at what level your life is displaying these qualities. The fruit at the lowest level determines your highest level of maturity. All these qualities work together, and there is a balanced growth that God wants to see as you mature. Take a moment and read these nine qualities again. Where is God leading you to growth and maturity that reflects His work in you to those around you?

Galatians 5 CSB

Freedom of the Christian

5
For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery. 2 Take note! I, Paul, am telling you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all. 3 Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to do the entire law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we eagerly await through the Spirit, by faith, the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything; what matters is faith working through love.

7 You were running well. Who prevented you from being persuaded regarding the truth? 8 This persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough. 10 I myself am persuaded in the Lord you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty. 11 Now brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. 12 I wish those who are disturbing you might also let themselves be mutilated!

13 For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself. 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.

The Spirit versus the Flesh

16
I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 6 CSB

Carry One Another’s Burdens

6
Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted. 2 Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone considers himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 Let each person examine his own work, and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else. 5 For each person will have to carry his own load.

6 Let the one who is taught the word share all his good things with the teacher. 7 Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, 8 because the one who sows to his flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9 Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.

Concluding Exhortation

11
Look at what large letters I use as I write to you in my own handwriting. 12 Those who want to make a good impression in the flesh are the ones who would compel you to be circumcised—but only to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even the circumcised don’t keep the law themselves, and yet they want you to be circumcised in order to boast about your flesh. 14 But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world. 15 For both circumcision and uncircumcision mean nothing; what matters instead is a new creation. 16 May peace come to all those who follow this standard, and mercy even to the Israel of God!

17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, because I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. 18 Brothers and sisters, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Psalm 7 CSB

Prayer for Justice

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.

1
Lord my God, I seek refuge in you;
 save me from all my pursuers and rescue me,
2 or they will tear me like a lion,
 ripping me apart with no one to rescue me.

3 Lord my God, if I have done this,
 if there is injustice on my hands,
4 if I have done harm to one at peace with me
 or have plundered my adversary without cause,
5 may an enemy pursue and overtake me;
 may he trample me to the ground
 and leave my honor in the dust.Selah

6 Rise up, Lord, in your anger;
 lift yourself up against the fury of my adversaries;
 awake for me;
 you have ordained a judgment.
7 Let the assembly of peoples gather around you;
 take your seat on high over it.
8 The Lord judges the peoples;
 vindicate me, Lord,
 according to my righteousness and my integrity.

9 Let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
 but establish the righteous.
 The one who examines the thoughts and emotions
 is a righteous God.
10 My shield is with God,
 who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge
 and a God who shows his wrath every day.

12 If anyone does not repent,
 he will sharpen his sword;
 he has strung his bow and made it ready.
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons;
 he tips his arrows with fire.

14 See, the wicked one is pregnant with evil,
 conceives trouble, and gives birth to deceit.
15 He dug a pit and hollowed it out
 but fell into the hole he had made.
16 His trouble comes back on his own head;
 his own violence comes down on top of his head.

17 I will thank the Lord for his righteousness;
 I will sing about the name of the Lord Most High.
