Devotional

I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive our authority. 3 John 9

If John was writing a letter to your church and wanted to describe you, what would John have to say? Take a minute and think about what words John might use. What words would be helpful for you to hear? How could those words motivate you to make changes? John has some hard words to describe this early church member. Diotrephes was someone who loved to be in first place, and he had a problem with authority. Oftentimes it’s easier to see what’s wrong with others than what’s wrong with you. Be open to receiving the hard words that help to shape you into the person God needs you to be in His church.

2 John 1 CSB

Greeting

1
The elder:

To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not only I, but also all who know the truth— 2 because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever.

3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Truth and Deception

4
I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, in keeping with a command we have received from the Father. 5 So now I ask you, dear lady—not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6 This is love: that we walk according to his commands. This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning: that you walk in love.

7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves so that you don’t lose what we have worked for, but that you may receive a full reward. 9 Anyone who does not remain in Christ’s teaching but goes beyond it does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home, and do not greet him; 11 for the one who greets him shares in his evil works.

Farewell

12
Though I have many things to write to you, I don’t want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister send you greetings.

3 John 1 CSB

Greeting

1
The elder:

To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.

2 Dear friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health, just as your whole life is going well. 3 For I was very glad when fellow believers came and testified to your fidelity to the truth—how you are walking in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in truth.

Gaius Commended

5
Dear friend, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters, especially when they are strangers. 6 They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God, 7 since they set out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from pagans. 8 Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can be coworkers with the truth.

Diotrephes and Demetrius

9
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive our authority. 10 This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome fellow believers, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church.

11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God. 12 Everyone speaks well of Demetrius—even the truth itself. And we also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.

Farewell

13
I have many things to write you, but I don’t want to write to you with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

15 Peace to you. The friends send you greetings. Greet the friends by name.

Psalm 38 CSB

Prayer of a Suffering Sinner

A psalm of David to bring remembrance.

1
Lord, do not punish me in your anger
 or discipline me in your wrath.
2 For your arrows have sunk into me,
 and your hand has pressed down on me.

3 There is no soundness in my body
 because of your indignation;
 there is no health in my bones
 because of my sin.
4 For my iniquities have flooded over my head;
 they are a burden too heavy for me to bear.
5 My wounds are foul and festering
 because of my foolishness.
6 I am bent over and brought very low;
 all day long I go around in mourning.
7 For my insides are full of burning pain,
 and there is no soundness in my body.
8 I am faint and severely crushed;
 I groan because of the anguish of my heart.

9 Lord, my every desire is in front of you;
 my sighing is not hidden from you.
10 My heart races, my strength leaves me,
 and even the light of my eyes has faded.
11 My loved ones and friends stand back from my affliction,
 and my relatives stand at a distance.
12 Those who intend to kill me set traps,
 and those who want to harm me threaten to destroy me;
 they plot treachery all day long.

13 I am like a deaf person; I do not hear.
 I am like a speechless person
 who does not open his mouth.
14 I am like a man who does not hear
 and has no arguments in his mouth.
15 For I put my hope in you, Lord;
 you will answer me, my Lord, my God.
16 For I said, “Don’t let them rejoice over me—
 those who are arrogant toward me when I stumble.”
17 For I am about to fall,
 and my pain is constantly with me.
18 So I confess my iniquity;
 I am anxious because of my sin.
19 But my enemies are vigorous and powerful;
 many hate me for no reason.
20 Those who repay evil for good
 attack me for pursuing good.

21 Lord, do not abandon me;
 my God, do not be far from me.
22 Hurry to help me,
 my Lord, my salvation.
